Where to watch Sumo?

Site The Good The Bad
NHK Grand Sumo site Content published every day
  • Videos are in 720p
  • Its hard to play on the tv because a lot of typing is involved
  • Content available during the basho and for a few days only afterwards
NHK Grand Sumo special site
  • Content published everyday
  • On days 1 & 8 you get an extra 50 min long uncut video which starts roughly half way through the day. On day 15 you get an extra video which is 90 mins
  • Videos are in 720p
  • Its hard to play on the tv because a lot of typing is involved
  • Content available during the basho and for a few days only afterwards
  • Site might contains spoilers as you surf it, especially bout results
NHK
  • HD videos
  • Easy to watch on TV
  • Videos uploaded late in the morning the next day. So the highlights of the first Sunday appear on YT on Monday around 10:30 GMT
  • Videos not uploaded over the weekend. They would uppload the Saturday & Sunday video on Monday!
  • Content available during the basho and for a few days only afterwards
  • Channel page might contains spoilers - winner ceremony videos, or thumbnails revealing bout result
The J-Vlog

  • Streams the entire day
  • Easy to watch on TV
  • JP watches along and comments. He used to play wrestling (which is a similar grappling sport) so he explains a lot of technicalities around the game play while its happening. Given I never played such kind of sport, JP pointers massively helped me get into sumo.

The Sumo Community

Here is a list of sumo content creators I follow. I try to list why I think each one is really good at. They have all been a huge help in my sumo journey. If you want to learn more about this sport, make sure to keep up with sumo content creators because there is a lot to learn.

Why to follow Their Forte Other stuff
CHRIS SUMO

The best on ground news coverage from Japan. Not only is this almost the only place to keep up with sumo news regularly, but also to learn about sumo. Chris makes videos explaining certain aspect of the sport (such as names and kimarites) and also things related to sumo (such as the sumo story telling). If you join the patreon, you will get some really special footage that is almost extremely impossible to find anywhere else (like the Okinoumi retirement). On top of that, he is very responsive on Patreon and can send personal messages from the subscribers to the wrestlers. Chris also has been trying to help retired sumo wrestlers adjusting to life after sumo. If you can only follow one content creator for sumo, Chris would be the best thing to keep you tethered to the sumo scene in Japan. News
  • Name explanations
  • Jungyo coverage
  • Retirement events
  • Young sumo competitions
  • Interviews with sumo wrestlers or famous members of the sumo community
  • Cultural sumo videos (like the story telling)
GRAND SUMO BREAKDOWN

If not for the synergy between the hosts, the fun games they play and the analysis - then for the comedy. 2 of the hosts practice sumo so they have knowledge of the technicalities of the sport. A great source to easy yourself into sumo or get some nice reviews and analysis from different perespectives - or just some really good laughs Reviews

SUMO SPIFFY'S BAR & GRILL

If you are into analysis, stats, numbers or would like to go down the rabbit hole of why the banzuke commitee did what they did, Sumospiffy is your guy. Here you would find some of the most in-depth analysis of a rikishi's basho. His banzuke predictions are very informative and detailed. I also enjoy the sumo tier lists he makes. If I'm not mistaken, he has a background in martial arts so he does have a good idea what he's talking about. Deep dive analysis

SUMOSTEW (Ter)

Sumostew is the best introductory YT channel anyone getting into sumo can follow. As a matter of fact, anyone who likes sumo should just watch her videos. Her videos are simply mesmerizing - a work of art. The production, her soft but engaging voice, the progression of the information, even her jokes are spot on. Sumostew looks beyond the basics or obvious. For example, instead of explaining what the ozeki rank and its challenges, she makes a video called The Extreme Challenge of Sumo's Loneliest Champions. She goes beyond the numbers and stats and explains the struggles and emotional challenges of rikishis at that rank. It is like she brings the information to life. Every now and then I would go back to the channel and rewatch some of the videos because I find them very soothing. Unfortunately, Sumostew has not posted videos for over a year now😔 Explanations
  • Interviews
  • Deep dives
THE DOHYO

Mr J Wags does very light sumo videos that are fun and easy to watch and always makes you hope the video was a little bit longer. He excels at analyzing the rules of sumo and rikishi progress. His segments of his episodes are creative and very entertaining. Great bite-size sumo content. He also has a patreon if you wish to support him. Analysis

SUMO PRIME TIME

Japan Sumo Associations's (Kyōkai) official YT channel. Its good but can be a lot better. Nowadays it mainly focuses on basho recaps, promotions and retirements. The older videos were more educational showing how the Banzuke is written or how hairdressers work. Some of those videos are amazing because the basically have back stage access. However, with that kind of access to rikishis, stables and sumo figures, you would think they would put out more unique and impactful content Content involving stable or rikish access

BASHO SIMPLIFIED
A relatively new sumo podcast which excels in doing deep dives. These deep dives cover a rikishi's career, ranks or jobs in the sumo world. Their pace is a bit slow but once you get used to it, its hard to let go. I listen to their episodes over and over again because its entertaining and a few hours long which makes the replayability high 😃. They also have a discord server which is really friendly and engaging. Deep dives

KINBOSHI SUMO

Fun reviews of bashos. They tend to dive a bit into health related & medical issues surrounding sumo. Reviews

NEW TO SUMO PODCAST

As the name suggests, its a new channel. Episodes are not too long and not too short. Fun to listen to. Basho Reviews

OTHER NOTABLE CHANNELS WHICH I DO NOT FOLLOW

SUMO JASON

Jaon Sumo is one of the oldest sumo content creators there is. He used to stream the basho by filming his TV using his phone. I watched a couple of them and they were very friendly. Unfortunately when NHK stuck all sumo content from YT Jason was hugely affected. His channel now is 684 videos strong growing.
